Time for Telangana

“History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.”–Karl Marx

new telangana state from andra pradeshThe history repeats when we make way for the emulation of past. The demand of new state of Telangana out of existing state of Andhra Pradesh out of the local politics is not surprising.

The states created on the recommendation of The States Reorganization Act 1956 should have been the last division of India on the basis of language or area. We may justify the linguistic bifurcation for the smooth development of the states. But bifurcation on the basis of development in some part of the state may not be justified. Analysts conclude that the demand of new states is always stemmed more from compulsions of electoral politics rather than any genuine desire to fulfill the aspirations of the local people.

"The creation many new states has been conceptualized and they all are in queue just waiting for their vibrant and more aggressive leader."

This is the time for Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) to emulate for their politics. The set back got in the Lok Sabha as well as Assembly elections gave them the right platform to go for the introspection. Only 2 seats in Lok Sabha Elections and 10 out of 45 contested might have taught them the Indian way of local politics.

The demand may be favorable for the people in long run, but the development issue should be taken with utmost care by the union government and the state governments. There should be proper allocation of funds for all parts of the state. Whole state should enjoy the growth and development uniformly. We can have a Development Commission like Election Commotion at the center for keeping a watch on these differences. At present instead of creating a new state there should be exclusive development programs for not only the concerned but all those areas which will be found to be underdeveloped.

new vidarbha state from maharashtraIf some politicians are able to buckle the government by provoking the people taking advantage of their emotions, then the political blackmailing will go on dividing the entire country into fragments. Creation of Vidarbha from Maharastra, Koshal from Orissa, Maroo Pradesh from Rajasthan, Harit Pradesh form Utter Pradesh, Tululand from Karnataka, Gorakhaland from West Bengal and Jammu from J & K…. (This list continues); has been conceptualized and they all are in queue just waiting for their vibrant and more aggressive leader.

I dunno whats wrong with these people in Andhra and Maharashtra....I wanted to point out maharashtra as well cos' of the pro-marathi circumstances developing out there, I was there and felt this marathi-manush and north indian friction developing out there, which would be having devastating outcomes if no checked in time...the icing on the cake I would say is this telangana issue, which is equally dis-orienting...
Nice blog btw....

Creation of separate state is NOT a separatist Movement at all. By creating new districts if a state Govt comes nearer to the people for governance, what's wrong in creating new States ???
New states are NOT separating from the country. Regional imbalance in different states can be addressed only through small unit of states. United States of America is having more states than India & it is more United. New states can perform well than the erstwhile states as being proved by Chhatisgarh which has been created out of Madhya Pradesh. It is Not always that politicians 'whip up' sentiments to creat new states, polictics rather brings out Order out of the Chaos of the multitudes. Let there be more states with Govts at their doorsteps rather than having states itself exploiting one region & enriching the other.

@anurag: thanks for the appreciation. i agree with you, this is how local politics makes its survival in India. when they have nothing new to woo the people, they start talking something like these to take the advantage of the sentiments of the people. They provoke them on the name of language, religion, region or even caste.

@sapan: thanks for you feedback.

i agree with you that creating new districts the state government comes nearer to the people and also creation of new state will benefit the people.

but my point is on what cost that benefit will come. the money and the resources required to run a government can be better used if used in the development of the part. we can have the division like 1956 when there was the danger of linguistic partiality. division on the basis of regional differences can not be justified. this kind of step decides the future of the country. states' development depend on the leadership of the people voted for and the development programs; all these movements are just done for political advantage.

i hope you got the idea what i mean to say.

Very good article, but alas misdirected in context and contempt.

Born out of politics is wrong notion because:
1) In 2009 elections all and sundry promised separate state. So if i wanted a separate state i could vote for Congress / TDP/ BJP / TRS / CPI and still think the state would be created.

2)Even if based on Politics, there has to be a justification in a demand? would you please take pain to think in that direction.

3)The merger of the states was opposed in SRC of 1956. Politics was the reason for merger. moreover, the merger was conditional, based on Gentlemen's agreement. When the conditions are not respected, the de-merger is a valid and reasonable demand.
Don't you think so?

@anonymous: good to see you ponder over the issue. whatever you said is correct, and i am not opposed to creation of new states but it should be on some genuine, pragmatic basis. i also know the fact about the conditional creation of AP in 1956. my point is clear that this is not the way we can handle our large and diverse country, we have to find out some other way for the development issues. its not only Telangana, there are so many parts in every state which need development. do you think we can go for them also? political parties want to take the credit of creating new states where they will be ruling, and we have the past in support of it. only future can tell us what we can not conclude from present, in many cases.

Dear Mr. Reddy,

Here's the pragmatic basis.
If you consider UttarPradesh by population it becomes 6th largest country on the planet.
Is it possible for one secretariat to address everybody's issues?

Please trust Indian people to make proper demands. even if a political leader makes an illicit demand. It will not be sustainable over long run.

In case of Telangana, the demand had been there for 50+ years and supported by left-wing and right-wing in equal measure. It is supported by Professors and Students alike. Supported by silly leaders and Leades like Chukka Ramaiah as well.

@anonymous: i think i am not able to convey my message through my article. i am not against creation of new states. as you mentioned area may be one good basis for the new states, definitely it will bring prosperity for the people. we can have some amendment in our constitution for the max area limit, but in India we can not trust even the people, especially when some political parties are behind them. here they can be provoked very easily on some matters like religion, caste, language, area, etc. the future of India should not see any event as we knelt down on some issues instead of solving them incisively.
